The natural harbor formed at the Ernakulam region slowly attracted traders to Kochi. The old Kochi included a group of islands including Willingdon Island and Fort Kochi. Kochi was the center of Indian spice trade for hundreds of years. After the port of Kodungalloor was destroyed by the massive flood on 1341 by the river Periyar, Kochi became the major trading center in the world trading map. Then eventually Kochi became the commercial hub of Kerala.
