But the great flood occurred in river Periyar has turned Kochi into a major trade hub, where Kodungalloor of Thrissur district had that place before. The natural harbor formed at the Ernakulam region slowly attracted traders to Kochi. The old Kochi included a group of islands including Willingdon Island and Fort Kochi.
